PHRI evolved from the successful and innovative Preventative Cardiology and Therapeutics Research Program established by Salim Yusuf in 1992 at the Hamilton Civic Hospitals Research Centre, located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Throughout the 90s the research program, focusing on CVD, grew under the mentorship and direction of Dr. Yusuf and in 1999 was established as a research institute and renamed PHRI. Many of the early studies, such as HOPE, OASIS and INTERHEART, provided the foundation and knowledge for new research questions – moving from treatment and secondary prevention to primary prevention and the quest for CVD risk factors. As it grew, so did its expertise broaden as new researchers joined the team. Today, PHRI’s research spans all frontiers of the globe and includes a broad spectrum of health-related issues.
