JD Schwalm
PHRI scientist JD Schwalm has been named the recipient of the 2026 Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Exemplary Leadership in Clinical Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery Award, recognizing his leadership and contributions to cardiovascular care.
Schwalm will be honoured at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which will take place place October 15 to 17 in Ottawa. He is a scientist in PHRI’s Knowledge Translation and Health Systems Research Program, co-Director of the Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) Knowledge Centre, a professor in McMaster University’s Department of Medicine, and an interventional cardiologist at HHS and Niagara Health.
“As chair of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s national Secondary Prevention Pathway Implementation task force, I’ve had the chance to work with outstanding and enthusiastic individuals from varying disciplines across the country,” said Schwalm.
Schwalm’s work is focused on bridging the gap between research and clinical care. He studies how evidence can be applied in ways that benefit patients, support healthcare providers and strengthen health systems. At PHRI, he has led and contributed to several research studies, including CarDIA, HOPE-4, ISLAND-ACS and MIPAD.
The CCS Exemplary Leadership in Clinical Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery Award is presented annually to a Canadian cardiovascular specialist who has demonstrated leadership in clinical practice, education, mentorship, quality improvement, and the delivery of evidence-based care.
