Frailty, renal disease, brain health and nutrition were key topics of discussion at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) Retreat held March 7, 2019 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario. Dr. Salim Yusuf, Executive Director of PHRI, kicked off the event, noting that “PHRI research covers about 60% of the global burden of disease.” Some 75 investigators and scientists attended the day of brainstorming, most of them from PHRI.

Dr. Mike Walsh, PHRI (left) leads breakout session on renal disease. He noted that “cognitive decline, frailty and nutrition are all topical in advanced chronic kidney disease.”
Dr. Andrew Mente, PHRI, speaks about the nutrition research done based on PURE data. He then led a breakout session on nutrition with Drs. Russ De Souza and Gui Paré.
Dr. Robert Hart speaks about the PHRI Brain Health Initiative, before leading breakout session with Drs. Mike Sharma and Jackie Bosch.
Dr. Melissa Andrews, Dalhousie University (standing) co-leads breakout session on frailty research with Dr. Darryl Leong, PHRI, seated to her immediate right, looking at how to measure frailty, what are the genetic pathways leading to frailty, and do disease interventions work as well in frail people as in non-frail?
Ted Scott, VP, Research, and Rob MacIsaac, president and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences, shown here at the retreat with PHRI’s Drs. Hertzel Gerstein, Salim Yusuf, and Sandra Carroll, dean of McMaster School of Nursing.
