Over three days, members of the PHRI team joined researchers from around the world at the Society of Clinical Trials (SCT) 46th Annual Meeting held in Phoenix, Arizona.

Attending from PHRI were Shrikant Bangdiwala, director of statistics, Kumar Balasubramanian, operations manager of statistics, Shun Fu Lee, senior principal biostatistician, and Maha Mushtaha, research project manager III with the global health program.

During the meeting, Shun Fu Lee presented work focused on advancing how cardiovascular trial outcomes are analyzed. Her presentation explored the use of multi-state models (MSMs) as an extension of traditional time-to-first approaches, which typically capture only the first event in composite outcomes. Using PHRI’s ORIGIN (Outcome Reduction with an Initial Glargine Intervention) trial as an example, she demonstrated how MSMs can account for multiple and recurring events, offering a more nuanced understanding of disease progression and treatment effects. This approach provides deeper insight into overall disease burden, particularly in trials with higher rates of non-fatal events.

The meeting was also a chance to reconnect with collaborators and meet others working in clinical trials, including Prof. David DeMets and members of Accelerating Clinical Trials Ontario.
