PJ Devereaux, deputy director and senior scientist at PHRI, has been inducted into the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest civilian honour.
The 2026 Order of Ontario recipients were announced in February, with the formal investiture ceremony held on June 1 in Toronto. Devereaux is among 30 individuals recognized this year for outstanding contributions to the province and beyond.
Devereaux is an internationally recognized leader in perioperative medicine who focuses on improving outcomes for patients undergoing surgery. Through large-scale clinical trials, he has helped improve how physicians manage cardiovascular risk, bleeding, and postoperative care, shaping medical practice and guidelines worldwide.
At PHRI, Devereaux heads up the perioperative and surgery research group. He has led major international studies and mentored many trainees and early-career investigators. He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Perioperative Medicine and has authored more than 450 peer-reviewed publications, along with over 85 book chapters, editorials and commentaries. His work includes 17 papers published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 13 in The Lancet, and 11 in JAMA. With an h-index of 115, he has delivered more than 1,000 lectures and research presentations across 41 countries.
