PJ Devereaux

The Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) congratulates PJ Devereaux, deputy director and senior scientist, on his appointment to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest civilian honour.

The appointment was announced February 17, 2026, by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Devereaux is among 30 individuals recognized this year for outstanding contributions to the province and beyond.

“I am immensely grateful for my appointment to the Order of Ontario.  This recognition reflects the extraordinary work of our team who have facilitated (Drs. Ameen Patel, Vikas Tandon), led (Drs. Flavia Borges, Emilie Belley-Cote, David Conen, Andre Lamy, Maura Marcucci, Mike McGillion, Bill McIntyre, Sandra Ofori, Jessica Spence, Michael Wang, Richard Whitlock) and coordinated (Kate Brady, Valerie Harvey, Jessica Tyrwhitt, Jessica Vincent) impactful perioperative research” said Devereaux.

“This honour was only possible because of the outstanding mentorship I have received from Drs. Gordon Guyatt, Hertzel Gerstein, and Salim Yusuf. I remain deeply committed to advancing innovative research that improves the care and outcomes of surgical patients.”

An internationally recognized leader in perioperative medicine, Devereaux’s research focuses on improving outcomes for patients undergoing surgery. His large-scale clinical trials have helped change how physicians manage cardiovascular risk, bleeding and postoperative care, influencing medical practice and guidelines around the world.

At PHRI, Devereaux heads up the perioperative and surgery research group. He has led major international studies and mentored many trainees and early-career investigators. He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Perioperative Medicine and has authored more than 450 peer-reviewed publications, along with over 85 book chapters, editorials and commentaries. His work includes 17 papers published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 13 in The Lancet, and 11 in JAMA. With an h-index of 115, he has delivered more than 1,000 lectures and research presentations across 41 countries.
