PHRI has been awarded the 2025 Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Dr. Harold N. Segall Award of Merit in recognition of its outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research and its ongoing efforts to improve heart health for Canadians.

“This award celebrates the dedication of everyone at PHRI. Every question we ask and every study we conduct is driven by the goal of making a real difference in people’s health and improving healthcare across Canada,” says Hertzel Gerstein, PHRI Interim Executive Director and Senior Scientist.

Senior Scientist Jeff Healey accepted the award on behalf of PHRI, a joint institute of Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and McMaster University, during the 2025 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Quebec City. A panel of experts selected PHRI for its work in advancing cardiovascular health and care.

“This recognition reflects PHRI’s dedication to advancing cardiovascular research and improving heart health for Canadians and communities globally. This important work exemplifies the excellence and impact we strive for at McMaster,” says Paul O’Byrne, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

“PHRI’s contributions to cardiovascular research world-wide have improved and saved the lives of many, and this award brightly reflects those efforts,” says Dr. Marc Jeschke, Vice President, Research & Innovation, and Chief Scientific Officer at HHS. “HHS and our patients are proud and grateful to have this top-tier research happening here.”

The Dr. Harold N. Segall Award of Merit was established in 1991 to honour the late Dr. Segall, a founding member and long-time archivist of the CCS. It recognizes individuals, groups, and organizations that have made a significant contribution to preventing cardiovascular disease and promoting heart health across Canada. In 2016, the award was presented to PHRI Senior Scientist Sonia Anand in recognition of her remarkable contributions to cardiovascular medicine and research.
