
Mike Sharma
Mike Sharma, PHRI senior scientist, has been selected to deliver the prestigious 2026 Hnatyshyn Lecture at the upcoming Canadian Stroke Congress, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to stroke research and care and the impact of his work across Canada and internationally.
The lecture will take place on Sunday, May 25, at 4:15–5:45 p.m., during the Congress in Banff, Alberta. In his talk, Sharma will explore the development and challenges of clinical trials, drawing on examples and insights from his own experience
Sharma has held leadership roles in major clinical trials advancing novel antithrombotic approaches to stroke prevention, as well as imaging and cognitive outcomes in large‑scale prevention studies. His work includes leading PHRI trials such as OCEANIC‑STROKE and AXIOMATIC‑SSP, and imaging sub‑studies within COMPASS and NAVIGATE ESUS.
He is a professor of medicine (neurology) at McMaster University, a vascular neurologist, and medical director of the Regional Stroke Program at Hamilton Health Sciences.
The Hnatyshyn Lecture is Canada’s most prestigious annual lectureship in the field of stroke. Established in 2003, it honours the legacy of Ramon J. Hnatyshyn, Canada’s twenty‑fourth Governor General, a founding board member of the Canadian Stroke Network, and a dedicated champion of stroke research.
