The Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) /Canadian Cardiovascular Society Distinguished Lecturer Award in Cardiovascular Sciences for 2021 goes to PHRI Senior Scientist PJ Devereaux, who heads up the perioperative and surgery research group. He is also a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, and of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact (HEI), at McMaster University, and President of the Society of Perioperative Research and Care (SPRC).

The annual CIHR/CCS Distinguished Lectureship Award recipient demonstrates significant impact and advancement in his/her field of research – nationally and internationally – as well as relevance of his/her research to a clinical setting.

In addition, Dr. Devereaux is being recognized for demonstrating impact on the development of young scientists and highly qualified personnel through mentorship and training.

He received the award virtually at the CCS Congress on October 21, 2021.

At 9 minutes into this video here, Dr. Devereaux acknowledges those who have made the greatest impact on his career and life to date, starting with his wife, and making droll comments on some of his professional mentors.

“I undertook six easy years of research training under the tutelage of Drs. Salim Yusuf and Gordon Guyatt. Although they were too laid back and reserved in providing feedback, they were and remain outstanding mentors to whom I owe a lot.”
