Seven researchers at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) have been selected as the inaugural recipients of the PHRI Career Award, a new internal award aimed at advancing research excellence and leadership at the institute.

The 2025 recipients of the PHRI Career Award are:

  • Emilie Belley-Côté, Scientist
  • Flavia Borges, Scientist
  • David Conen, Senior Scientist
  • William McIntyre, Scientist
  • Jessica Spence, Scientist
  • Harriette Van Spall, Senior Scientist
  • Mike Walsh, Senior Scientist

The PHRI Career Award provides three years of salary support, allowing researchers to pursue PHRI research and develop new research initiatives

“This is a major step forward in PHRI’s commitment to supporting research talent from within,” said Hertzel Gerstein, PHRI Interim Executive Director. “These awards are more than just financial support. They are an investment in our researchers’ ability to lead transformative health studies.”

Each application was reviewed by a panel of 13 senior researchers, most of whom were from outside PHRI to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.

“Our researchers are doing important work to improve health in Canada and around the world,” added Gerstein. “We’re proud to support them as they grow their work at PHRI.”

Congratulations to the 2025 PHRI Career Award recipients!
