Referring to the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Munich, Germany August 25-29, 2018, Population Health Research Institute was “one of the four or five institutions that had the biggest impact at what is the biggest meeting in the world in cardiovascular disease,” Salim Yusuf said at PHRI Research Day on Sept. 6, 2018.

Presentations by PHRI investigators at ESC 2018 included the following:

Late Breaking Pharmacological Science – PJ Devereaux

PJ Devereaux presented on the MANAGE Trial – Dabigatran versus placebo in patients with myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery.

Clinical Trial Updates- John Eikelboom

John Eikelboom discussed the COMPASS trial – bleeding and cancer risk in patients with vascular disease treated with Rivaroxaban. At a session called “Satellite Symposium: Setting the COMPASS into new directions,”  he spoke about improved outcomes for patients with chronic Coronary Artery Disease and Peripheral Artery Disease, along with his PHRI colleague, Sonia Anand.

Hot Line Session – Andrew Mente

Andrew Mente spoke about the PURE study results showing the association of dietary quality and risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in more than 218,000 people from over 50 countries. He also spoke at a session called How to Eat Right: Should PURE results influence dietary guidelines? where he unveiled new, ongoing work at PHRI about going healthy, globally: a comparison of dietary patterns.

Mahshid Dehghan, also a researcher of nutrition at PHRI, gave a presentation on “Fats, Carbs, Alcohol: Debunking the Myths of Healthy Nutrition.”

Late Breaking Science in Heart Failure – Harriette Van Spall

Harriette Van Spall, a principal investigator in heart failure at PHRI, presents findings from Patient-Centered Care Transitions in Heart Failure (PACT-HF) pragmatic stepped wedge cluster randomized trial during ESC 2018. She also participated in the rapid-fire abstract-based programme, with “Biomarkers reloaded: diagnosis and prognosis of acute heart failure,” on the topic of Predicting risk at the point of care: N-terminal prohormone Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NTproBNP) levels improves performance of the LACE index among patients hospitalized for heart failure.

Salim Yusuf participated in several sessions, including “Lifestyle choices and blood pressure” – speaking on salt, BP and risk; Satellite symposium on saving lives beyond adherence (his talk, “Are we there yet? Challenges and opportunities in cardiovascular prevention.”)

PHRI Senior Scientist Stuart Connolly received the ESC Geoffrey Rose Lecture on Population Sciences, for his talk of prevention of stroke in atrial fibrillation.

VISION Study: Frequency, Causes and Timing of 30-Day Mortality after Noncardiac Surgery

Jessica Spence, a PHRI Investigator and anesthesiology resident at Hamilton Health Sciences and PhD candidate at McMaster University, working with PJ Devereaux, participated in Late Breaking Registry Results, on the VISION study, looking at the frequency, causes, and timing of 30-day mortality after noncardiac surgery: analysis of the vascular events in noncardiac surgery patients.
