  • PHRI’s First Biostatistics Research Day

PHRI hosted its first-ever Biostatistics Research Day, highlighting the great work and accomplishments made by our biostatistics team and colleagues from other research institutions in the Hamilton area.

The event kicked off with 17 poster presentations on a variety of topics including artificial intelligence in clinical trials, advanced statistical methods such as multistate models, Bayesian adaptive designs, and sample size optimization. Other posters explored risk-based monitoring, cardiovascular outcomes research, data standardization practices, and a systematic review of adaptive clinical trials from 2010 to 2025.

After the poster presentations, the event featured two panel discussions:

  • “Should PHRI consider having formal stopping guidelines for futility?”
Panelists included Shun Fu Lee, senior principal biostatistician; David Conen, PHRI senior scientist; Sameer Parpia, associate professor and biostatistician at McMaster University’s Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact; and John Eikelboom, PHRI senior scientist
  • “Should PHRI consider using multistate models for multiple outcomes, recurrent events and competing risks?”
Panelists were Raed Joundi, PHRI scientist; Darryl Leong, PHRI senior scientist; William McIntyre, PHRI scientist; Hertzel Gerstein, PHRI interim executive director and senior scientist; and Rajibul Mian, PHRI senior biostatistician.

The event concluded with the eighth annual Janice Pogue Lectureship in Biostatistics. This year’s speaker, Dr. Diane Catellier, delivered a compelling talk on how data sharing and open science can strengthen health research worldwide.
