Stroke is the most common cause of adult disability and the third leading cause of death worldwide, most of which occurs in low-income countries. An effective global strategy to reduce the risk of premature stroke mandates systematic evaluation of the contribution of important risk factors in various ethnic groups and geographical locations.

The overwhelming success of the INTERHEART study earlier afforded enormous insights into our knowledge of risk factors for stroke in different regions of the world and among different ethnic groups, arming public health policy makers with critical information to develop population-based approaches to prevent MI. Similar data were needed to help in the prevention of stroke, and INTERSTROKE provided those results.
