INTERSTROKE is a Study of the Importance of Conventional and Emerging Risk Factors of Stroke in Different Regions and Ethnic Groups of the World
Stroke is the most common cause of adult disability and the third leading cause of death worldwide, most of which occurs in low-income countries. An effective global strategy to reduce the risk of premature stroke mandates systematic evaluation of the contribution of important risk factors in various ethnic groups and geographical locations. The overwhelming success of INTERHEART has afforded enormous insights into our knowledge of risk factors for myocardial infarction [MI] in different regions of the world and among different ethnic groups. As a result, it has armed public health policy makers with critical information to develop population-based approaches to prevent MI. Similar data are needed to help in the prevention of stroke.
