POISE-2 (Ongoing)
PeriOperative ISchemic Evaluation-2
A large, international, placebo-controlled, factorial trial to assess the impact of low-dose clonidine and low-dose acetyl-salicylic acid (ASA) in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery who are risk of a perioperative cardiovascular event.

< back

Worldwide 200 million adults annually undergo major noncardiac surgery, and 5 million of these patients will suffer a major vascular complication (e.g., vascular death, nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal cardiac arrest, or nonfatal stroke). Despite the magnitude of this problem there are no established safe effective interventions. An international group of investigators have come together to undertake a 10,000 patient perioperative randomized controlled factorial trial to assess the impact of low-dose clonidine versus placebo and low-dose acetyl-salicylic acid (ASA) versus placebo in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery who are at risk of a perioperative vascular event.

Study Design: Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Control, Factorial Assignment, Safety/Efficacy Study.

Intervention: Low-dose clonidine versus placebo and low-dose acetyl-salicylic acid (ASA) versus placebo.

Length of Study: 3 year recruitment period. 1 year follow-up period.

# of Patients: # 10, 000.

Patient Populations: Patients undergoing noncardiac surgery who are at risk of a perioperative vascular event.
