Apixaban VERsus Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA) to PRevent StrOkES

The purpose of this clinical research study is to evaluate whether apixaban is more effective than acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in preventing strokes and systemic embolisms associated with subjects who have atrial fibrillation. The safety of this treatment will also be studied.

Study Design: Randomized, Double Blind, Active Control, Parallel Assignment, Safety/Efficacy Study.

Intervention: Apixaban vs. acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)

Length of Study: 5 years

# of Patients: 5,600 (2,500 enrolled as of March '09).

Patient Populations: Atrial Fibrillation.
